Poll results on creation of PhilCeCNet regional chapters From December 29, 2009 to January 31, 2010, we ran an online poll in PhilCeCNet.ph with the question “Are you in favor of creating PhilCeCNet Regional Chapters?” All thirty-eight respondents answered in the affirmative. The poll was actually posted in tandem with an online discussion started by PhilCeCNet Coordinator Ave Manriquez in the PhilCeCNet online community with the intention of generating feedback and soliciting suggestions from the community that would aid the network in crafting its future initiatives and in formulating guidelines for the creation of said regional chapters. As in the poll, members replied to the discussion positively. Yasmini Luz Dendiego of the National Computer Center has this to say: “I think that it would be best to set up regional chapters for the PhilCeCNet so that peculiar issues/concerns in the regions may well be given focus… This setup would also help PhilCeCNet gain a wider reach and consequently greater participation among CeC stakeholders, players and implementers based in the regions...” |

The AIJC survey reveals that more girls than boys access the Internet in Mindanao. Filipino schoolchildren are computer literate, as almost three-fourths (74%) have access to the Internet. Schoolchildren in the Visayas and Metro Manila have greater access than their counterparts in the Cordilleras and Mindanao. Maintaining and visiting social networking sites (SNS) is emerging as the number one online activity. Almost 9 of 10 schoolchildren who connect to the Net are members of Friendster.
Online gaming is another favorite with almost 8 of 10 schoolchildren who connect to the net play online games. There are more grade school pupils than high school students who play online.
These are among the major findings of the survey, Internet Access and Use by Filipino Schoolchildren, conducted by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC). The study was commissioned by UNICEF. According to AIJC President Ramon R. Tuazon, UNICEF will use the study in coming up with policy and action agenda in creating a child-friendly cyberspace. |

Finally, a byword! A byword by which our local Community eCenter (CeC) will be called. A total of ninety-three entries were gathered from the field relating to the conduct of the CeC slogan contest, and has, in part, fielded the personal perception of what a CeC is to a local customer, implementer and/or stakeholder. But a particular theme stood out, in the words quoted “Connecting and Empowering Communities” as submitted by Mr. Jimmy Calata of Nueva Vizcaya CeC. As the official slogan, the statement anchors on the abiding purpose of what the local CeC should stand for. True enough, the CeC has bridged vast opportunities for the common man in our grassroots communities. Congratulations to Mr. Calata, and to all who have generously shared their ideas, we express our sincere gratitude for imparting with us your appreciation for your local CeC. |
