Guests and participants during the ICT Month culmination program at NCC-FOO in Zamboanga City The National Computer Center-Field Operations Office joined the nation in celebrating the National ICT Month in June as declared via Presidential Proclamation No. 1521, signed on May 28, 2008 by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. With the theme of "Get Online, Philippines!", this year's ICT month celebration highlighted the country's achievements in establishing a robust and reliable ICT infrastructure to improve communications, education, business and government services which made an impact the lives of Filipinos.
In Zamboanga City, the NCC-FOO's ICT Education and Training Unit took the lead in bringing ICT to the community through the conduct of free ICT-related activities to the public, foremost of which were the ICT Information Drive to local barangays, free computer literacy courses to local and national government employees, painting and poster making contests for public and private high schools, educational tour and IT equipment showcase for elementary pupils, and donation of used computer units and books to schools and organizations. As the lead agency for promoting ICT as a tool for national development, these activities are also made part of the regular roster of activities of NCC-FOO’s Education and Training Unit.
This year, more than 600 out-of-school youths and adults (OSYAs), parents, senior citizens, students, barangay officials and teachers attended the ICT Information drive as it made its pit-stop in the local barangays of Divisoria on June 8, Upper Pasonanca on June 17, Capisan on June 24 and Mercedes on June 28. In addition, the constituents of each barangay were also provided with slots for the upcoming one-day free training on Basic Computer Applications and Internet Access in July. |

The Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture (OPAPA), an ICT-enabled agriculture program based at the Philippine Rice Research Institute, is the only Philippine entry shortlisted for the eIndia Awards 2010 under the category eAgriculture: ICT Enabled Agriculture Initiative of the Year.
A partner of the Philippine Community eCenter Network (PhilCeCNet), OPAPA is a network of institutions that provides education, training, extension and communication in agriculture, making information more accessible to those who need it. With the use of ICT, this program establishes a virtual network that provides information on-demand, develops content based on farmers’ needs, and provides access through networks and the Internet.
The eIndia 2010 Awards, on the other hand, are the premier accolades given to innovative endeavors made in assimilating technology in developmental concerns and they have been instrumental in promoting the most innovative initiatives in the domain of ICTs for development (ICT4D) and for spreading awareness about the role of ICTs in addressing social concerns. The awards have been instituted with the primary aim of felicitating and acknowledging unique and innovative initiatives in the use of ICT4D. |
