2010 is here. Where are we going this year?
There are various existing Community eCenters in the country. Several success stories were showcased during the 5th Knowledge Exchange Conference on CeCs in September last year, which became an inspiration to many. But for others, the real status of their CeC is still vague. Is the infrastructure enough? Do the services/products offered meet the needs of the people? How about providing information and knowledge that the community really needs? In question also is the sustainability of the CeCs, especially with the threat of change of leadership in the face of the upcoming national elections. The CeC management must have a long term view while the knowledge workers must work towards known and established goals. Now, more than ever, is an opportune time to establish new partnerships and generate new ideas and insights. The goal of system support of the Philippine CeC Program ensures that national machinery for ICT-driven development will make the CeC capable of responding to challenges brought about by the rapid developments in technology. Now is the time for the CeCs to review their goals and make an assessment to determine how far they have come in achieving those goals and map out the necessary actions. The government is taking all necessary steps to bring ICT services/products to all citizens with the CeCs as conduits. Let us, therefore, take all the necessary actions to ensure that we are moving in that direction. |

Here’s an interesting and very much relevant article from Robert Hawkins posted at the World Bank EduTech blog site.

Angelo Ramos, a key leader of the telecentre movement in the Philippines, has prepared a short digital documentary/commentary giving us his personal perspective on who belongs and uses telecentres. It questions the gendered perception of how telecentres or public access points are used.
It is well done and very thoughtful, enjoy and spread the word... we are sissies and proud of it!

The members of the Philippine Community eCenter Network (PhilCeCNet) Executive Council celebrated the Christmas season with a simple Mongolian Barbecue party last December 16, 2009. Ms. Yvonne G. Flores, PhilCeCNet Treasurer, opened her humble home at the Teacher’s Village in Quezon City to the holiday celebration. Present during the celebrations were CICT Commissioner and NCC Director General Timoteo Diaz de Rivera, NCC-Field Operations Office Director Maria Teresa M. Camba, PhilCeCNet Chair Dr. Angelo Juan O. Ramos , Jimmy Calata, Carol Destacamento, and Cheryl Ortega. The get-together of familiar folks and faces set off the ambience for a joyous night of merry-making for the yuletide season. The guests gamely participated in two of the prepared games for the party: the popular TV game “Pinoy Henyo”, followed by the “Continue the Lyrics” game, patterned after a famous television show. The crowd gamely participated in the party activities. The affair sealed this year’s many challenges and successes of the network while reminding us of the child within us and our awaiting of the coming of the child Jesus. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy 2010 to all of us! |
